Walcot put themselves within touching distance of the Southern Counties South title with a 34-5 victory over local rivals Oldfield at Shaft Road.It was the third time this season that the two sides had locked horns and the third time that Walcot had emerged clear winners.

It was Walcot, attacking up the slope and the wind behind them, who broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when they put pressure on the Oldfield scrum, won the ball and set up a ruck out wide which allow scrum-half Maaka Papuni the space to dive in for the game's opening try.

The score appeared to spur Walcot into life and, when Oldfield spun the ball wide looking for a quick reply, Walcot winger James Wheeler fly-hacked from a loose pass then controlled the ball well with his feet before pouncing on the ball in the in-goal area.

The visitors began to dominate all areas and, as play was spread from one side of the park to the other, the overlap was created and centre Joel Dixon had the simplest of tasks in running the ball over the line.

The prolific Dixon then turned provider as he made an incisive break up the middle and beat the last defender with a well-timed pass to loose-head prop Danny Williams, who sprinted in from 30 metres. Sam Saunders kicked the conversion.

Walcot then finished the half in style with their fifth try, winger Garth Hannaford finishing after a fluent move putting the visitors 27-0 ahead at the interval.

The second half was dominated by the home side as they tried to claw their way back into the game.

When Walcot were reduced to 14 men, Jerry Walsh sent to the bin for killing the ball, Oldfield used the extra man to their advantage and eventually made the space out wide for No 8 Shane Smart to score in the corner, Lee Sumsion hitting the post with the conversion attempt.

Determined to get something out of the half, Walcot at last fought their way into Oldfield territory and, with the last play of the game, the ball was spun wide.

Centre Pete Willis, who was supporting inside, broke the line and scored under the posts, Saunders sealing the win with his second conversion.

A win over Wimborne next week would all but wrap up the title given the size of Walcot's points difference.

Walcot 2nd suffered a huge setback in their quest for the Somerset 2 North title as an in-form Oldfield 2nd shut the home side out by winning 15-0 at Albert Field.

Walcot never looked like scoring as the visitors proved too strong.
