Corsham will take on Oldfield at Lacock Road in Saturday's Southern Counties South derby looking to bounce back from a 31-3 EDF Energy Senior Vase second-round exit at the hands of Avonmouth. The Wiltshire side were made to pay for a lack of concentration in the third quarter of the game, conceding three successive tries to their Western Counties North opponents which put the tie out of reach.
The home side made a bright start to lead courtesy of a Nick Denham penalty and they dominated possession in the first half, although an incisive break from fly-half Paul Clifford failed to yield a try.
The Corsham forwards won a number of strikes against the head in the scrum, but they failed to turn that possession into chances. They paid for that when a fortunate bounce saw Avonmouth sprint away for a converted try and a 7-3 lead.
The home side were again caught napping at the start of the second half and the Bristol visitors capitalised to build an unassailable lead.
Oldfield skipper Lee Sumsion, meanwhile, has challenged his Shaft Road side to turn rivals Corsham over on their own ground on Saturday to propel the Bath-based club up the divisional table.
After a slow start, Oldfield have put together back-to-back victories and they will be targeting three on the bounce at Lacock Road with a full-strength squad to call on.
"Our season has started to gather momentum as our injuries have cleared up," said Sumsion.
"In our last two games, we had some of our more experienced players back including our strongest front-row and key players in the back row and the back three.
"That made us look much more compact and more streetwise and it has helped us build some confidence that we can make significant progress up the table between now and Christmas.
"But to do that, we have to win games like this weekend's trip to Corsham, where we'll be taking on a side who have made a fair start to the season."
Corsham 2nd went down 15-12 to a strong Chinnor touring side after dominating the opening 20 minutes and falling behind to a try sparked by a mistake in their own 22.
A try by scrum-half Gary Ings, converted by Jason Goldsworthy, put the home side into a 7-5 lead at the break, but injuries to back-row players Rich Morea (hamstring) and Chris Crook (ankle) caused disruption in the home ranks.
Chinnor took advantage to steal into an 8-7 lead with a drop goal, but a touchdown from centre Steve Scholes-Hamilton regained the lead for Corsham, who looked to have claimed the honours until the visitors snatched victory with a try in the final minute. |
