A young Oldfield second team, laced with a few old heads travelled away to face a strong Yatton outfit.
Oldfield started the game well, playing up the slope and into the wind. The Oldfield, pack led by veteran skipper Jason Humphries played well early on, enjoying good territory, without ever really threatening a score. Crucial turnovers at key times allowed Yatton to relieve the pressure and good running out wide from their back line led to two Yatton tries. Andy Murphy once again starred, as he battled to hit the barn door at line outs. Sammy Burns, an elusive runner from full back; felt some early pressure from a series of Yatton bombs, but Oldfield turned around just 13-3 down at half time. Oldfield struggled to play rugby in the right areas of the pitch and Yatton’s silky runners combined for another two long range scores, early in the second half. To their credit, Oldfield responded well and enjoyed a period of good possession and territory. The pack continued to pressure the Yatton scrum and slowly brought Oldfield to the ascendency. Aged Humphries then joined his injured young fly half, Pat Bunton on the touchline and young Rich Stainer deputised ably in the front row thereafter. Chairman Jerry Burns, who over the years has spent £000’s of his own money on a variety of hair colouring products, also came off the bench to good effect. The increasing pressure brought two good tries from John Fielding and Ben Escott, one following a Birdy bomb. Oldfield’s spirits were now high and as the game went on they looked the better side. Cruelly the mounting pressure on the Yatton scrum was relieved, as they conjured up an injury and conned the referee into going uncontested thereafter. Positive running lines from Chris Ericson and Sammy Burns almost combined for Sam to score a late try, but Yatton weathered the storm and held on for a 23-15 victory. |
