The 31-0 victory over Sherborne was pleasing for several reasons. Firstly because we managed to put in a fine defensive display and shut out the opposition for the first time this season. Secondly.....
because we have a large crop of young guns in the side who continue to impress and perform in the first team. Finally because some of our more 'seasoned' spectators commented on how impressed they were with the performance. We are fortunate enough to have some individuals who travel to watch Oldfield play, week in week out, and it is great to pay them back for the support that they give us. The scoreline may suggest that the fixture was a one-sided affair but Sherborne are a decent outfit who brought the game to us in the first quarter. However, after we weathered the storm we put togehter our finest half of the season to date. The pace we have in the back line was a major threat and if it was not for some dropped catches, the game would have been out of Sherborne's reach after 40 minutes. None-the-less we crossed for 2 fantastic team tries where Joel Hawkins and Alex 'the Butcher' Woods were on the end of fine moves to score. Freddie nonchanlently slotted the conversions in style!!! In the second half we took our feet off the gas, but we still managed to score 14 unaswered points thanks to Joner bursting over under the posts and Ricky Gibson flying in from the wing to also post the ball under the sticks. We did manage to lose the Butcher and Freddie in the 2nd half to minor niggles, and Staunts left the pitch to give the ever green Mark Farmer Patrick a run out in his 25th season at Shaft Road. All in all it was a very pleasing result which took us to 4 matches in a row undefeated. The next fixture away at North Dorset however will be an all together more challenging fixture against some tough opposition who always give us a good match. Let's hope we can continue this momentum into Saturday. Well done boys. Sumo.
