1st XV Win 6 in a Row. PDF Print E-mail

The first XV managed to make it 6 in a row with a seemingly one-sided affair at the Mighty Shaft Road.

However, the score line does flatter our side if you judged the match purely in terms of possession and territory. Once again our finishing was clinical and the combinations in the midfield proved to be too much for Ivel to handle. Freddie, Joel (2), Woodsy, and birthday boy Quinno (2) took the shares of the spoils with some excellent team tries.

However, although the backs scored more tries, the team performance was once again outstanding. Staunts, Pearcey and Nutty took their turn on to keep the bench warm. This allowed Bus Head to view the match from a different perspective for the first time this season, and he felt outnumbered from the offset as I distinctively heard him state at the first line out that "Ivel had more coaches than Arleen’s!!!"

Up front Ivel Ba Ba's were extremely competitive at the line out where they opted to use two pods to attack our ball. This was often successful but we did manage to win sufficient ball to unleash our backline or set up strong advances from rolling mauls. Woodsy made some good breaks from the base and Joner showed a signs of reaching his best form with some bullocking runs through the Ivel defence.

There were several 'quotes of the day' which began in the huddle pre-match. On the pitch I did fear for the life of the Ivel No. 12 when he lambasted his forwards for not tackling the 'fat number 3' of Oldfield. I wasn't sure whether his forwards were going to lynch him or whether Joner would, but less than 5 minutes later Joner ran straight over said No. 12 and justice were served. The other moment that made Staunts and I chuckle was when Woodsy took a dink on his rather small nose. He looked really shocked and upset (we've seen this before at the 7s last season!) while he wondered if it had been broken, or if it has swelled up, but we couldn't tell how big is should be as it is a proper Bazza Manilow!!!

As for the opposition, it was refreshing to play against an opposition that we had no knowledge of, as it provides a good test for both teams. In the bar afterwards we mentioned to them that we'll be in fancy dress when we visit them on Dec 15th and they were more than happy to extend the arm of hospitality. That's what it's all about and we expect a closer score line when we visit Yeovil in the return fixture.
