Yatton III (19) Versus Oldfield III (3) PDF Print E-mail

Oldfield Thirds travelled to “The Park Yatton” on Saturday with a rich vein of royalty within their (normally pallor) ranks!!

The return of veteran “Sir” Guy “Kenny” Everitt boosted a much-changed Oldfield back line.  Unfortunately, the injection of blue blood failed to inspire an Oldfield team who struggled to find any forward momentum during a fairly dour game at Yatton.  Skipper Andy Murphy was unfortunately unavailable due to a manicure appointment!!!

Oldfield commenced the game with plenty of endeavour, pressurising the Yatton half for much of the first 20 minutes through good line out and scrum.  However, failure to score with the advantages of wind and slope ultimately led to the Yatton resurgence and resulting victory.

Tries either side of half time effectively ended the often-scrappy contest that failed to spark into life.  Yatton number 8, Steve Castle gave a man of the match performance scoring late in the first half and notably kicking to touch from Oldfield indiscretions.  Yatton substitutions at half time bolstered their scrum that gained the upper hand in the second half.

Oldfield 7, R. Goby again used his subtle commentary skills to endear himself to the referee, (for f**k sake ref)!!.  The friendly and playful banter between the two resulting in……….ah yes, several Yatton penalties!!!!!!!

Laner tried hard to attack the Yatton defence in the second half with a hack through eventually leading to a penalty, converted by fly half Pete Goodwin to give Oldfield their only score.

Buoyed by the score, Oldfield continued to press up the hill through the now tiring forwards.  Quick ball from Laner to the back line opened up a 3 man overlap on the right wing.  Only centre Jack (tights) Gillett will know why he cut back inside!!!!!!  The resulting turn over by Yatton yielded a neat breakaway try for the hosts.

Oldfield welcomed new signing Ed Gill, who played in the full back position, ably dealing with several Yatton bombs within his 22.  Saturday also saw the introduction of Ricky Wynes to the second row at the beginning of the second half.  Wynes worked hard to secure a creaking Oldfield scrum.

Well done to all for keeping going to the very end; looking forward to Avon next week.

A special thanks to JR Hartley’s Tours for their transport.  All the players enjoyed the scenic journey from Bath to Yatton, via Wootton Bassett, Gloucester and Thornbury!!!
