Andy Owen and former player-coach Andy Boyce helped Oldfield defy abysmal conditions and stern opposition from visitors Wimborne to bounce back to winning ways in Southern Counties South.
Beaten a week earlier by second- placed Frome, Oldfield saw both make significant contributions to a 21-8 win. The hosts mustered three tries with prop Sean Jones, player-coach Ben Staunton and centre Casper Johnson touching down.
"Wimborne stuffed us last season, so it was good to chalk one up over them," said skipper Lee Sumsion
"We played very well to score three good tries in difficult conditions and it was great to see Andy Boyce back in the team. He had to come off the bench into the back row at open-side and was involved in two of the tries.
"Ben Staunton's try was a five-man move and he went over the corner for his first touchdown in seven years - a great team score."
England Under 18 fly-half Freddie Burns kicked two conversions with skipper and scrum-half Sumsion adding the third.
"Now, we've got a week off before we make the trip to Yeovil to play Ivel Barbarians and then we take on Frome in the Bath Combination Cup on Saturday, December 22," said Sumsion. |
