This game, billed as Oldfield 3rds vs Avon 2nds, was played after being postponed last week.

Oldfield elected to play into the gale force wind and after a good defensive half made it to half time 12-3 down. Avon's heavier pack rumbled around and had the nudge in the scrum, the only other Department where they had ascendency was in the 'gob' department and their constant whining and moaning was clearly something they have spent a lot of time rehearsing.

Into a stiff breeze Oldfield tried to run the ball out of defence, but a turnover in the centres meant that Avon regained possession and had numbers out wide for a relatively easy score. Young Luke Lane had a fine game for Oldfield at Scrum Half, though quite what he made of his mum screaming for the opposition all afternoon is a subject for another day.

In the second half, Oldfield had plenty of possession and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty try after 3 consecutive penalties were awarded against Avon for dropping mauls, killing rucks - all of which occurred just inches short of their line. This proved tro be crucial as had the scores been narrowed then one of the many penalties awarded would surely have sealed the game, instead of which they were used to gain field position, in search of that elsuive try.

Injury prone Chris Murphy broke his back for the third time this year and Rocky Burns picked up his 11th yellow card of the season. Elsewhere Godber made an appearance at 8 and showed us why he is really a prop, Ricky Gibson put himself about and young Steiner again showed plenty of promise. Perhaps the revelation of Oldfield's afternoon though was Mark McCrae, who was by some margin Oldfield's best player.

At the final whistle you could tell how much the win meant to Avon, by the cheer that went up from their players and as the sides made their way back to the clubhouse, certain Avon supporters were once again moaning about Oldfield having stolen their youngsters. Well the news for you is Oldfield has never 'stolen' or 'approached' anyone, however don't forget players do have the right to play where they choose.
