Oldfield 2nd XV Beat Old Edwardians 1st XV (17-7) PDF Print E-mail

On a mud patch of a pitch Oldfield elected to play into the elements and were rewarded with a penalty and an early 3-0 lead.

Young Dan in the front row scrummaged well and had some great carries in the loose. His front row comrades of Old Farmer Patrick and Andy Murphy gave us a solidish platform, with Rocky and Gobby in the engine house. Murph, was boasting before the game that he'd lost a stone in weight and could actually see his manhood when going to the loo. This must have been a momentous discovery for Murph, as he hadn't seen it for years, but word from his home camp was that he was a little disappointed to see how small it was, though Rocky was said to be impressed!

A second penalty was kicked to give Oldfield a well deserved 6-0 lead and then our sloth like winger Andy Taylor, was put away into acres of space. A slow jog should have seen him home, but in his usual way, he stopped running, messed around and you got it, was tackled by an 86 year old grandmother, hanging off the back of a zimmer frame. Most wingers like space, but our ten metre finisher clearly doesn't. After a sweeping move he did trip over the line for a score a bit later on, but Andy no one was interested in your tales of finishing after the match, even Murph would have scored that one.

During an injury break and after a lot of whining from the ever yappy Shadow and Gobey, Murph lost it and decided to have a poll there and then for 'who else wanted to be skipper!' Half-time came at the right time and a carefully crafted poem from Bunti followed by a love in and group hug, got the show back on the road. Young Chris Ericson and the back line in general defended very well throughout the game and Ed Gillett showed some touches of class in the centre. Old man Millward came on for Ed in the 2nd half and also looked to be having fun in the mud and Russ HoneymBum at 7, was once again outstanding.

For some unknown reason Gobby decided to try and go it alone from our own try line and was stopped dead in his tracks, turned over and from the ensuing passage of play, Old E's scored in the corner, bringing the score back to 14-7. For a short while it looked like Oldfield were going to have to weather a storm, but good possession from line outs and in the loose, meant that Oldfields half backs were able to dictate where the game was played - deep in Old E's half. After yet another infringement, the referee used his second whistle (the first one had previously been blown to death) and the penalty was converted into 3 more points. The last 10 minutes saw Oldfield cruise through to what was a thoroughly deserved victory and now lie 4th in the league.

Try: Taylor

Penalties: Bunton (4)
