Oldfield fielded a very strong 2nd XV, with no thanks to the few late cry offs & no shows - you know who you are - don't do it!!
Early in the game Oldfield's territorial advantage was rewarded when Bunti kicked a penalty to make the score 3-0 and this was extended to 10-0 after a converted try by someone.
In fairness, despite possession and territory Oldfield were at times refereed out of the first half, with a penalty count that was overwhelmingly and confusingly, weighted 90% in Norton's favour. The result was a stop start half, with huge frustration and a sense of injustice hampering the home team, maybe one day we (and me) will learn that the referee will never change a decision once it's made.
A breakaway try and penalty from Norton late in the half meant the sides went in 10-10 at half time, a scoreline that hugely flattered a dogged, but limited Norton side.Andy 'the caged' Bird suffered a career threatening ankle injury at the end of the half, somehow got the ambulance crew to wheel him around the entire pitch on a bed, whilst puffing on gas. Froggy, looking more and more like a gypsy every day was summoned from the touchline as Oldfield rejigged things for the second half. He'd come up to watch the game, but in our hour of need he ran off, borrowed some kit and joined the fray, with some great breaks and deft touches (you never lose class Froggy). At half time, Humphs rightly gave a speech centred on discipline and asked that no-one react to any further bad decisions. The scene was set, the kick off went up and what followed was 40 minutes of rugby from the top drawer.
The Oldfield front row of Humphs, Murph and Farmer Patrick started to dominate, with power coming through from the boiler house boys of Rocky and Shadow. This gave a platform for the side and Bunti who had switched to 9 revelled as we wona near endless supply of good ball. Andy Wright, returning to the side after being found by the missings persons department at Interpol, last week - made some great charges from 8 and the support he received from Fielding and the storming Guy Webster meant that Oldfield were always on the front foot. Indeed tries from Wright, Webster (2), and others (sorry lads my memory has gone) meant that Oldfield's lead continued to stretch. Reader and Stafford in the centres made some great breaks all afternoon and young Chris Erikson never put a foot wrong at full back.
The second half saw repeated requests from Midsomer Norton to end the match early turned down by an Oldfield side who were determined to make the most of the opportunity to rack up a big score. The five second half tries (4 of which were converted) meant that Oldfield ended the afternoon with a thoroughly deserved 43-10 victory
