Avonvale flying high in their league with 11 wins out of 11 were brought down to earth at Fortress Shaft Road.

Andy Murphy, recently recovered from liposuction skippered a mix and match team to a comprehensive victory. From the KO Avonvale started brightly and took a deserved 7-0 lead after a period of sustained pressure.

Oldfield settled into the match with Farmer Patrick feeding Bunti down the blind side, who in turn put Ben Escott in for a touchdown in the corner. More pressure followed and Oldfield slowly got the upper hand. Grisly Jack Burns was threatening from the wing throughout and younger brother Sam showed great pace as he tormented the home defence, a brace of tries being the least his efforts deserved.

Rocky and Chappers rolled back the years in the boiler house and from the way they played an outsider would surely never believe that they were aged 55 & 56 respectively. Just goes to prove that youth is no substitute for experience.

Bunti did his best to feed quick ball to Homer at 10 and Homer did his best to slow it down for his young runners outside. In fairness there has been a leak at the power station and the poor chap is still recovering from radiation sickness, though it is now feared that his hair has gone for good.

Chris Erikson looked calm and assured at full back and Ollie in the centre made some strong runs through the Avonvale defence. Up front young Rich Stainer had a great game, Murph flumped around until he was substituted for Oldfield debutant Hugh and Jonny F and Gobby ensured that Oldfield were first to most breakdowns. In a good all round team performance, Hick came off the bench Hick and despite stepping up to the 3’s for the first time, he really didn’t look to be too far out of his depth.

Ed Gillett, recently home from ballet school pranced around as a second half replacement in his tights – God only knows what his opposing centres were thinking – probably the same as the Burns boys when they see a nanny out and about, which probably accounts for why the poor lad showered in his undies!!!

Perhaps the highlight of Oldfield’s 7 try thriller was when Rob Parker came off the bench and slotted a touchline conversion, salvaging some family pride, after brother Homer had earlier missed 4 from in front of the posts.

The final score was 41-7 to Oldfield, a great effort from the squad of 23

Tries – 7 including Sam Burns (2), Gobby, Escott and others!
