Oldfield's high-flying under 19 side faces a massive challenge at Shaft Road on Sunday
when they take on their counterparts from National 3 club Redruth in the fourth round of the National Colts Cup (2.15pm). Awarded a bye in the first round, the Oldfield youngsters have already beaten South West 1 side Brixham's under 19s in the competition to line up this weekend's crack at last season's beaten finalists.
"Our colts side have already worked a bit of a miracle to beat Brixham and Sunday's game against Redruth is another massive step up in the class of opposition they face," said Oldfield club official Jason Humphries. "They are a very talented group of young players and we hope to see some good support turn out to back them in a tough tie on Sunday." Oldfield's colts squad includes 17 players who regularly turn out for the three of the club's senior XVs on a weekly basis, as well as talented youngsters from local schools such as Beechen Cliff.
Two England Under 18 call-ups - fly-half Freddie Burns and Beechen Cliff School's Kane Palma-Newport - will be in Oldfield's line-up along with Scotland Under 18's Jamie Harrup.
And playing alongside the three young international stars will be Ollie Hayes, a South West representative player, and Matty Clifton, Matt Pearce and Ricky Gibson, who have all been ever-presents in Oldfield's 1st XV. |
