Oldfield Colts knocked last season's beaten National Colts Cup finalists Redruth out of the 2007-08 competition
with a 16-8 win over the National 3 club's youngsters at Shaft Road last Sunday.Oldfield conceded an unconverted try against the run of play early on but they reclaimed the momentum with scything breaks from Matty Pearce and prop Kane Newport and a series of determined drives then allowed fly-half Freddy Burns to send wing Honeybun over in the corner for an unconverted score.
Redruth quickly responded with an easy penalty to go 8-5 up at the interval but Oldfield turned the tie around on the hour.
Gibson won Redruth line-out ball and the pack drove hooker Hayes over for a try to give the home side a 10-8 lead.
Redruth then engineered their own downfall when their full-back was driven back over his own try-line to concede a five-metre scrum. With Oldfield's front-row trio in uncompromising mood a try looked on the cards, but Burns coolly clipped over a drop goal to extend Oldfield's lead to 13-8 and then wrapped up the win with a stoppage-time penalty.
Oldfield: Stainer, Hayes, Newport, Gibson, Shahin, Honeybun, Mercer, Clifton, Clarke, Burns (capt), Lilley, McDonald, Goodwin, Pearce, Ericson.
Replacements: McAfferty, Smith, Lane, Lovell.
