Oldfield 2nds Beat Winscombe 18-5 PDF Print E-mail

Oldfield's attempt to claw back some of the 4 points taken away by First Eleven's farcical  award of a walkover to Bristol Harlequins last week got off to a bad start as visitors Winscome raced into an early 5-0 lead.

After this early setback Oldfield enjoyed periods of good pressure and from a scrum on the 10 metre line scrum half Bunti raced down the blindside and put winger Jack Burns away for a cracking try in the corner.

Image  Playing into a stiff breeze Oldfield worked their way up the field, but at crucial times a dropped pass, or turnover in possession enabled Winscombe to use the strong wind to clear their lines with some long touch finders. The front row of Humphries, Murphy and Patrick went well and the line out jumpers, Rocky and Shadow also delivered a stream of good quality possession. At times Oldfield were guilty of trying to score from every set play and in pushing too hard they contributed to a half time score of just 5-5.

In the second half Oldfield showed greater patience and as they went through the phases gaps started to appear. Colts hooker Ollie Hayes had a rare run out in the centre and with partner Clint he made some good ground up the middle, with Honeybun, Fielding and Hawkins cleaning out rucks to secure good quality ball. Sam Lane at 10 was lively throughout and after a good break in midfield he went in under the sticks, with Bunti's conversion making it 12-5 to Oldfield.

As the half wore on Oldfield dominated possession and field position and Bunti clipped over two long range penalties to give Oldfield a comfortable lead of 18-5. Froggy once again starred from the bench, Tom Chapman made a lively contribution and winger Theo also made his Oldfield debut.

The win lifted Oldfield to3rd place in the League and just one point behind 2nd placed Walcot. If and it is a big if, our appeal against the Harlequins walkover is overturned then we would have a great opportunity to go 3 points clear of Walcot, something that is now in the hands of the South West RFU Appeals Committee.
