OLDFIELD'S TITLE HOPES STILL ALIVE PDF Print E-mail

A late Chris Quintin try stitched up a dogged 14-0 home win over local rivals Corsham

last Saturday to keep third-placed Oldfield in touch with the promotion pace in Southern Counties South. And the Shaft Road club's captain Lee Sumsion believes the divisional title is not out of Oldfield's reach yet by any means.

Oldfield's win left them in third spot in the table, a point behind leaders Trowbridge and behind second- placed Frome on points difference.

Trowbridge travel to Sherborne this weekend to play their game in hand over Oldfield, while Frome are on cup duty.

"We dogged out a good win over Corsham to prove to ourselves that we can win ugly as well as pretty and that's important at this time of the season," said Sumsion. "Looking long-term, we still have to play the top two - Trowbridge away and Frome at home - so there's still a lot to play for."

"If we win our home games we'll finish third at the very least and if we win them all, we could even be promoted as a divisional champions."

Battling for their lives in the bottom half of the table and only three points clear of the second relegation place, Corsham made Oldfield work hard in a tight contest.

By and large, the Wiltshire club's defence coped with everything the home side threw at them with the Corsham pack particularly competitive at the set-piece and breakdown.

Sumsion kicked three first-half penalties to give the Shaft Road side a 9-0 half-time lead and full-back Quintin wrapped up the points when he crossed late on for the game's only touchdown.
