Oldfield 2nd's Go Down Fighting @ Old Reds PDF Print E-mail

Oldfield visited run away league leaders Old Reds, knowing that they were the only side to have beaten them this year.

In what was always going to be a hard game the huge Old Reds side started well and scored an early try.

Things were looking ominous for Oldfield as Reds dominated possession and time after time used their superior size and physicality to bash their way over the gain line. Oldfield defended manfully and snatched two quick scores after incisive running from the threes. Oldfields backs proved that pace and agility were more than a match for the Reds bruisers. James Read at 10 took the line up well, on the odd occasions he had possession and was ably assisted by centres, Froggy and Sam Burns.

Sam Lane at 15 made a couple of telling contributions going forwards, but in truth Oldfield struggled to generate a good platform and spent most of the half in defence. Russ HuneyBum (pictured)

was once again outstanding and Jon Fielding and Shadow also got around the park to make some good tackles. Andy Wright at 8 graced us with his presence, although he was seen in the clubhouse afterwards with two birds, but declined to introduce them to the lads - shame on you Wrighty.

Andy Taylor finished off a great break to bag his customary try and then the influential Reader bagged another, after a defence splitting break, both converted by Bunti. Reds hit back with a try of their own and then after a mazey run by Honeybum, which saw him jink past 4 defenders, Jon Fiedling popped up with the ball and snuck over the line,  for another converted score and a half time lead of 21-15. The scoreline flattered Oldfield a little at half-time and the scene was set for a huge second half.

You could sense that an upset was on the cards and Reds came out in determined fashion at the start of the second half. Then came a crazy 5 minutes that turned the game on it's head. The Reds fly-half, enjoying endless amounts of good possesion, spotted some poor positioning in the Oldfield rear after a couple of well placed kicks, Reds regained possesion and scored two converted tries under the posts.  A third try in this devastating 5 minute spell followed and thereafter Oldfield were really left playing for pride.

Ben Escott once again made some great tackles in defence and Ollie Hayes made a good impact from the bench when he came on at 8. Oldfield never gave up and scored another try after more quick feet and thinking, before the game ended with a final Reds score. In fairness, Oldfield were beaten by a better side on the day, but can take pride in the way they fought, for all bar that crazy 5 minutes, which cost 21 points in what ended up as a 55-26 defeat.

Tries: Read, Fielding, Burns, Taylor

Conversions: Bunti (3)
