Oldfield's dream of winning the U19 national colts competition was kept alive and burning, following a professional victory over a well drilled and organised LongLevens side, pleasing Oldfield's 'well spirited' travelling support.
Following a nervous Oldfield start, LongLevens took an early 5-0 lead with a very well taken try from a counter attack through their expansive backline and Oldfield immediately realised that any prematch expectations of an easy afternoon were incorrect. From this point on Oldfield took control of the game and following an excellent passage of play and an extended period of pressure a deserved penalty was awarded to Oldfield. Inspirational captain Freddie Burns took no hesitation in pointing to the sticks and three points soon followed 5-3. Shortly after the restart, a bizarre decision from the 'whistle happy' referee awarded LongLevens with an easy 3 point opportunity which was duly accepted by LongLevens fullback to take the score to 8 -3. For the next 20 minutes or so Oldfield dominated all aspects which calmed the early nerves and allowed Oldfield to put some pattern on the game. Scrum-half Luke Lane made a scything 20 metre dash and following a quick turnover, secured by Oldfield's dynamic loose forwards, Freddie Burns hit a 45 metre drop goal, to take the score to 8 - 6. The remainder of the second half was dominated by Oldfield pressure, but unfortunately no additional points followed.
Following some inspirational words at half-time by Oldfield's coaching team, Oldfield made an excellent start to the second half which resulted in another tough penalty shot which F.Burns gratefully accepted to give Oldfield the lead for the first time 8 - 9. Once again Oldfield looked in total control with the ball in hand and some smart play ensured LongLevens never looked like troubling the score sheet. The Oldfield pack were especially impressive and some explosive running off the base by Messers Mercer and Harrup kept Oldfield going forward. This was backed up by some great lineout work led by Hayes and Clifton and some gritty defence by the rest of the Oldfield squad. The inevitable penalty soon followed which Burns gratefully accepted to take the score to 8 - 12. Unfortunately with 20 mins to go, the heavens opened, which tested both the skill and ability of both sets of players and the dedication of the Oldfield travelling support. The elements proved too much for 'ex-captain' Trefor Roberts who decided to watch the rest of the game from the comfort of the bar. With 10 minutes to go, and against the run of play, another shock penalty was awarded to LongLevens, once again their skilful 15 took the three point opportunity taking the score to 11 - 12 and leaving us with a very tight finish. However, from this point on Oldfield starved LongLevens of any possession and with seconds left on the clock another penalty opportunity soon followed. Burns took this opportunity which ended the game at 11 - 15 and saw Oldfield progress to the national phases of the cup competition for the first time in the club's history. Although the whole team did the club proud, notable performers were - Burns, Hayes, Clifton, Stainer, Lane and man of the match Guy Mercer. Fingers crossed for a home tie, and further cup glory. |
