Oldfield Shaft Road plays host to cup rugby this weekend when Oldfield take on South West 2 West mid-table outfit Yatton in the quarter-finals of the Somerset Cup.
A 31-13 away win over hosts Dorchester last Saturday kept Oldfield tucked in behind Southern Counties South leaders Trowbridge. Joel Hawkins, meanwhile, ran in two tries to take his tally for the season to 23 touchdowns at Dorchester in one of his finest displays of the season.
Sean Jones, Andy Owen and Matt Pierce also touched down for Oldfield, who were always in control, with skipper Lee Sumsion kicking three conversions.
"It was a good win and it keeps us up there with the clubs chasing the two promotion places," said Sumsion.
"Our target now is just to keep churning out the wins and try to make the most of a couple of crucial games coming up against other sides at the top of the table."
On the face of it, Saturday's home cup tie is a step up in class for Oldfield, but Sumsion reckons home advantage could count.
"We've got to fancy our chances because there's not much between the two sides on paper and we're at home," said Sumsion.
Oldfield Under 19 will be looking to take a step closer to a trip to Twickenham in the National Colts Cup on Sunday.
The Shaft Road club's youngsters travel to Gloucester to take on Longlevens in the south west regional final of the National Colts Cup.
A win would put Oldfield's young stars through to the national knockout stages. |
