With an advertised 1.15pm meet, the rag tag bunch of mercenaries that congregated at Shaft Road were keen to get over to Gypsy Lane and take on Frome in what was billed as, a Friendly!!!
The omens weren’t good, Murph was a piss up looking for a brewery, Jase was nowhere to be seen and Chairman Burns was on his way to Norton to support his boys. The side assembled, Humph’s strolled in and before you knew it, there we were on the pitch ready to kick off. Playing with a strong wind behind, Oldfield dominated territory, but struggled to gain good quick possession; as the sage old Frome Pack pulled every trick to slow our ball down. After a period of sustained Oldfield pressure, Frome broke out and scored a breakaway try against the run of play. Oldfield responded well with good phases of possession eventually leading to a well deserved try in the corner, converted by Chris Erickson. The start of the second half saw Oldfield begin to take control of possession and once again playing into the elements the likes of, Chalkie White, Jase Humphries and Rich Gobey carrying the ball well. Some good work from the Pack saw a rare quick ball and as it was fed wide, veteran Paul Smith shipped the ball on for winger “Sir” Guy Everett to score. At 7-12, Oldfield scrapped out the remaining 20 minutes with Shadow pulling in well in the Centre and the sleek Rich Stainer remaining as steady as a rock at Full Back. Frome’s response to this was to resort to punching, stamping and eye gauging, but fortunately, the Ref was wise to their tactics and the penalty rout turned in Oldfield’s favour. Man of the match must go to Jase Humphries who offered himself time and again to crash the ball up. Pass of the match must go to Shadow, who found his winger “Sir” Guy with a raking 30 yard pass off his left hand whilst running flat out!!! Oldfield withstood the Frome pressure and held on to a well deserved 7-12 Victory, proving, that organization and pre-match training have nothing to do with talent and results on the pitch!!! Well fought lads.
