Southern Counties South club Oldfield have re-appointed long-serving outside centre Andy Boyce as their head coach.
Boyce, who coached the Shaft Road club to the Somerset Premier title three seasons ago, steps into the position vacated by Ben Staunton at the end of last season due to work commitments.
And, working with newly-appointed club captain Chris Quinton, Boyce intends to set his side performance-related targets for a 2008-09 season which will see Oldfield forced to rebuild their senior side.
"We will lack some of the quality we had last season because we've lost Ollie Hayes, who has signed for Bristol, and Freddie Burns, who has joined Gloucester," said Boyce.
"We've also got Sean Lilley away in Australia for a year - all promising and high quality young players, who won't be available to us next season."
Boyce's return to the fold after spending most of the last year running in half-marathons, saw him play a handful of games at the end of last season.
But he has no plans to pull his boots on again this winter.
"I'll be there as emergency cover but next season is all about rebuilding the team and performing to our potential, something we didn't do last season," he said.
"We beat the poorer sides in the division easily, but we repeatedly came up short against the top-four teams and we need to ditch that habit, first and foremost.
"We won't be setting out to chase promotion. The challenge facing us will be to re-shape and develop a new-look team and make sure we go out and do ourselves justice week in, week out." |
