BURNS AND CURRIE ON TRY TRAIL PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bath Chronicle

England Under 18 Bath Rugby prop James Currie and City of Bath College student Freddie Burns have played a key role in an impressive build-up by England Under 18 to Sunday's Test match against Argentina. The tourists defeated Buenos Aires 39-19 before scoring a massive 107-3 win over Mendoza last Sunday.

England were due to face one further warm-up game, against Uruguay last night, before taking on Argentina in the climax of their three-week tour.

Fly-half Burns, who recently signed for Gloucester, scored a pair of tries against Buenos Aires at Casi Club Athletic San Isidro.

Burns scored the first of his two tries on the 17-minute mark after a great interception deep in England's 22. He then ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts.

He quickly followed up his first score when England turned Buenos Aires over on 50 metres.

Newcastle Falcons' Rory Clegg then off-loaded to Burns who ran in for his second try.

England Under 18 forward's coach Martin Haag said: "This was a tough game, but we had a good first-half.

"The whole England pack performed very well today, especially in the scrum. The half-backs also did well, as did Burns.

"Overall, though, this was a good team performance."

It was Currie's turn to get in on the try-scoring act when England Under 18 powered their way to a third consecutive win in Argentina on Sunday evening in front of the country's vice-president.

The Argentinean government supremo watched the game after opening the new pitch at the Mendoza club and saw England run in a bumper 17- try haul, including a hat-trick of scores for London Irish wing Marcus Watson.

Jacob Rowan, Sam Edgerley and Christian Wade also secured braces of tries, with Leeds fly-half George Ford kicking 11 conversions.

Currie's score came early in the first half after Mendoza drew a penalty back in the first eight minutes following Watson's first touchdown.

England pressed ahead with a 12-3 lead when a good lineout and drive saw Currie muscle his way over the line.

Coach John Fletcher said: "I'm delighted with the team's performance. We went into the game wanting to put the opposition under pressure when they had the ball and also when we did. We did that and our attack was very good, with all players showing a high level of understanding and skill.

"We scored some outstanding tries, and the most pleasing aspect of the performance was that the team stayed precise in their decision- making and were ruthless in their approach and defence.

"England coach Mike Ford was watching and we would like to thank him for his time in assisting with some coaching last week."
