Bristol Rugby Head Coach Richard Hill reshuffled his pack for the Middlesex 7's tournament as Kevin Maggs and Anthony Elliott were replaced by talented Academy player Ollie Hayes and 1st Team regular Lee Robinson.

The Bristol Rugby Sevens squad travelled to Twickenham this weekend with high spirits, intending to kick-off pre-season with a victory on the hallowed turf.

Despite leaving the plate competition at the semi-final stage, Bristol showed some promising signs of emerging talent as they secured a convincing victory over West Country rivals Bath.

The squad, captained by Greg Barden who was ruled out of playing action due to a late injury, were sent out of the main competition after a 21-12  defeat to Worcester.

Bristol showed early signs of winning intentions as Haydn Thomas broke through the Warriors defense and over the line, scoring the first try of the game. Academy players Ollie Hayes and Nick Scott made their first appearances in the Bristol shirt, whilst Josh Brown in particular provided some robust defense on the wing, stalling the Warriors' attack.

In the end, Bristol struggled to find space in which to run with the ball and despite excellent defensive play by the likes of Lee Robinson, Worcester ran in three trys to seal the win and send Bristol into the plate tournament.

Determination remained high in the Bristol camp with the squad eager to achieve their first win at Twickenham in five years, and particularly against old rivals Bath.

This determination was clear from the outset, as Bristol launched into attacking rugby, led by Sevens pro David Lemi, who made sure the pace of the game was set from kick off. Bath responded well with the first try of the game coming from Ed Jackson, who broke through the Bristol defense to land over the line, taking the score to 7-0.

Not willing to let the game go out of sight, Bristol continued to put in some strong defensive play, driven again by Bristol first team regular Lee Robinson and Josh Brown. Bristol's attacking play was again led by David Lemi, who completed his hat-trick of tries with a clear run through midfield and beyond the opposition defence. Final score Bath 10 Bristol 21.

The second semi-final of the plate competition saw Bristol take on Saracens, who had put in a convincing victory (10-34) over fellow London side Wasps, sending them out of the tournament.

Lemi continued to provide quick pace in the backs, making some excellent breaks alongside Redford Pennycook. Despite struggling to find space, tries did come from Lee Robinson and Haydn Thomas, but Saracens provided the final blow with a late try, taking the score to 12-31 and sending Bristol home.

Head Coach Geoff Moon gave his thoughts on the tournament:

"I was very pleased with the growth of the players over the tournament and the desire to win and not accept second best. We should have won against Worcester but we didn't take all the opportunities presented to us"

"The team lifted their game against Bath and performed very well before being knocked out by arguably the best team in the tournament. The Bristol squad came together very well on the day and gave it everything. Which is all we can ask for."

Bristol now head to Pontypool on Wednesday for the second of the pre-season friendlies, after losing to Exeter on Saturday.

Bristol 12 - Worcester 21
Bristol 21 - Bath 10
Bristol 12 - Saracens 31
