Oldfield learnt a harsh lesson after turning around at half-time with the scores level at 3-3 before crashing to a 33-3 defeat to Oakmeadians in Southern Counties South.
Having matched their visitors in all departments for 40 minutes, the game was evenly balanced and the next score was likely to prove decisive. Unfortunately, that score came through a missed tackle and breakaway from the Oakmeadians' outside centre. The floodgates opened and scores trickled in throughout the second half as Oldfield's fitness, shape and composure all deserted them. It was a rude awakening for the Old Boys and coach Andy Boyce and captain Chris Quintin left the squad with a clear idea of what is expected of them if they are to pick up wins in the coming weeks and kick-start a tough first month of the season.
Boyce said: "Without a doubt, we have a talented and skilful but, still young group of players who just need to settle into playing a game with some basic structures, and develop a few hard edges and the ability to close out games and make good decisions at key points in games such as this. "With some hard work on the training paddock, things will slot into place. "It's just a case of the sooner it happens the better."
Oldfield travel to Tadley on Saturday. |
