Oldfield got their season to winning ways with a victory away at Minety.
Conditions were not great on or off the pitch and expansive rugby was always going to be at a premium as the wind, rain and sloping pitch dictated where and how most of the game would be played. With the conditions in their favour Oldfield started the stronger and soon found themselves in a 9-0 lead thanks to penalties from the boot of Joel Hawkins. Some basic handling errors were all that stopped Oldfield racking up tries during the remainder of the first period, as frustration threatened to overspill as Minetys tactics did not allow much rugby from either side. The second half started brightly for Oldfield as they found themselves capable of retaining possesion up the hill and agianst the elements. Injuries heavily disrupted proceeding as the visitors ended up having to field several players out of position and momentum was lost. Minety found a way back into the game and broke away for a try. The exitable home crowd had by now, and not for the first time, overstepped the mark with the referee and amoungst other things encroached onto the field of play to voice their opinions. Play was halted as the official moved the entire crowd to the opposite end of the ground behind the perimeter ropes. Oldfield contnued to try to play as much rugby as was possible under the conditons and were justly rewarded with an uncoverted try just after the hour mark to seal the game. Minety stuck to their task and with the game virtually over, and Oldfield down to 13 men due to further injuries and a sin binning, score a converted consolation try. Prominant for Oldfield was flanker Anthony Flammia and full back and Captain Chris Quintin. Oldfield move into next weeks game against Bradford on Avon content with the win, but with the feeling that there is a lot more to come.
