Oldfield travelled to Winscombe with a balance of young and experienced players, looking for a much needed performance and win to restart their season.
With the rain thankfully holding off during the game, Oldfield took to the pitch to find it water logged in sections, but ultimately playable. The game started with Winscombe proving to have a much more powerful organised front eight. During the 1st half Winscombe were able to create scoring chances from line out and the scrum. This led to prolonged pressure, but Oldfield struggled to maintain possession and control on their set piece and were turned over on regular occasions in the first half. Sheer grit and determination from Oldfield in defence kept Winscombe at bay and left the score 15-0 at half time. The second half started with Winscombe pressing early for another score. Again Oldfield showed their determintation to make sure they kept Winscombe out with awesome tackling from Rich Gobey , John Fielding and Chris Bird. Oldfield started to turn the tables with good passages of play from the forwards who had battled in the mud all day. Oldfield pressed, but ultimately the conditions got the better of both sides in the second half and it became a stop start affair, with restarts being the most watchable part of the game. The game ended with Winscombe scoring two further tries and Oldfield realising that the better team had won. However, Oldfield can be proud of how they took to the match with performances from all of the lads. Players to mention are Jack Burns who is growing into the number 8 role with every match. He once more took the man of the match award, allowing him the bragging rights over his Brother Fred. John Fielding for taking on the front row, Ricky Wynnes for again showing he is getting better and better at prop and Rich Gobey for his tackling, forward work and summer time kick off times! Oldfield take on Weston Hornets next week at home. Kick Off 2.30pm,..... yes that's 2.30pm Rich. (Photograph: Jack Burns Man of the Match)
