Oldfield 3rd XV 55 – 0 Stothert & Pitt 2nd XV

The build up to this game followed a well worn routine. After a morning of text messages, a small group of players assembled in the clubhouse, asking the same old questions; did we have fifteen, did we have a front row, who was playing fly-half? JR seemed to have all the answers, but there was a big cheer in the changing room when Chalky sauntered in 20 minutes before kick off; by this time, a young cranes side were already up on the pitch warming up.

From the kick off and the first breakdown, it was clear that Oldfield’s pack were hungry for the ball and it wasn’t long before the first try was scored with some good running and offloading. Oldfield’s South African winger was only able to play the first half and started to demand the ball from all quarters; unfortunately his eagerness in the line led to a number of flat passes that the referee decided were a bit too flat.

In the scrummage Oldfield’s pack had a strong advantage and with Chris Shaw rolling back the years, Stothert’s scrum half was finding it difficult to deliver any sort of ball from the back of a quickly retreating scrum. With some forward momentum, Oldfield’s backs started to run some good lines, led well by their new university recruit at fly half. By half time, Oldfield were four tries to the good and with Jack Burns taking up the kicking duties a few conversions started going over as well.

The second half continued in much the same vein. The almost perfect alchemy of wise heads & youthful exuberance, led the pack to dominate set plays and the loose. The forwards didn’t keep it all to themselves though and tries were scored by Toby at fly half, Tony at centre and big Jon Cowley on the wing. The forwards however won the battle, with Kev bagging two from the front row, one for Jack roving at eight and after watching Toby dance around tacklers but not getting nearer the line, Jamie stole the ball from him and barrelled over for his try.

All in all a very enjoyable game of rugby to watch and play in, credit goes to Stothert & Pitt and JR for sticking at it and scrummaging until the end. Men of the match award went to the three university boys and a delicate bottle of rosé was enjoyed by all in a victorious changing room.
