Oldfield got back to winning ways with an excellent performance over title contenders Dorchester at Shaft Road on Saturday.
The game which went ahead despite very cold/crisp conditions, at great credit to both sides and a pragmatic referee, was played at a fantastic tempo throughout and was well appreciated by the supporters who braved the elements.
Oldfield admirably lead by Lee Sumsion, in Chris Quintin’s absence, took control from minute one and played with an intensity and spirit that was too much for the travelling Dorchester side who perhaps thought they were in for an easy afternoon.
Oldfield scored four tries, two from speedy winger Dan Cossins, one from ‘evergreen’ John Fielding and the final from Sean Hawkins, younger brother of Joel.
On a day where the whole squad deserve credit it’s difficult to pick out individuals, but Lee Sumsion and Sam Burns deserve great credit for their game management and overall game control, the whole pack were exceptional throughout and Adam Rolfe was a welcome return. Outside Tony Elliot hit some great lines supported by Pagey Jones and Chris Erickson with George Patrick and Dan Cossins a constant threat.
Finally it was great to welcome back Matthew Nuttall from a serious injury, his maturity was an example to the youngsters.
Boys it’s the best Christmas present I’ve ever had!! (don’t tell Bicci)... And it’s great to go into the Christmas break with some confidence. If we can play like this every week, 2010 looks very promising.
Happy ‘bloody’ Christmas Quinno
