Big Effort Secures the 2nds a 38 - 12 Away Win at Gordano.

Oldfield II’s took to the pitch knowing only a victory in Gordano’s back yard would get them off the bottom on Somerset North II.

The game started with Oldfield winning the toss and choosing to kick off.  Both sides produced strong passages of play in the first twenty minutes as each side attempted to come to terms with the heavy under foot conditions. However, with both teams keen to pay attacking rugby it promised to be an open game.

Oldfield scored the first try after excellent play from Fly half, Sam Burns and centres Ian Millward and Richard Trott, combing well to create controlled possession and quick phase ball over the game line. This was to prove to be Oldfield’s blueprint of how they were to play throughout the match.  Sam Burns dove over for a great try in the corner. The conversion, much to pack leader Andrew Murphys amazement, went straight between the uprights.

Gordano responded and hit back with good possession in the Oldfield half which resulted in a try through poor tackling by Oldfield. The conversion was missed.

The Oldfield pack responded to Andy Bird’s pleas for better rucking and immediately hit back with territory, possession and a fantastic try under the posts. Unfortunately, it was back to the old days on the conversion front as it was missed! (much to the front row unions amusement!) The half ended leaving both sides evenly matched at 5-12.

The second half was to prove to be the possible turning point in Oldfield’s season. It started with the Oldfield pack continuing to pressure Gordano at the break down. The backs were regularly fed quick ball, which Sam Burns duly turned into clean breaks for the centres and wingers.

Oldfield scored three unanswered tries in a blistering 15 minute period of the 2nd half. George Patrick going over in the corner, converting a difficult opportunity. Harry Godwin powering through tacklers to go over the line and Ben Allmark picking up the ball and diving over after an excellent run from Luke Lane. The conversion’s kept coming and Oldfield took a healthy lead.

Gordano then hit back, taking the game into Oldfields 22, where they camped out for 12 minutes trying to score. Due to excellent defending by Father and Son, Ricky and Adrian Wynes and Chris Murphy, Oldfield were able to kept Gordano at bay. However, the Gordano flanker powered through a tired Oldfield defence to score a consolation try.

Oldfield’s captain demanded another try and it was duly provided with Jack and Sam Burns starting with a quick penalty allowing Oldfield to power up the field. After four or five phases Prop James Godwin picked up the ball at the base and powered over from 10 yards to score Oldfield last try of the match in the corner. The last play went to Oldfield kicker Andy Bird, who after being quite rightly berated for poor kicking in the past, took on the Chairmans bet “I’ll give you a quid if you get that” (yes, he’s generous!) and duly slotted the conversion between the sticks to leave Oldfield with 38 points from the game.

Mentions have to go to the whole squad of 17, who played their hearts out. Big effort followed by big rewards. Oldfield II’s move off the bottom of the table and now look to Yatton in two weeks to further increase their points tally.

Tries G.Patrick x 2 James Godwin, Harry Godwin, Ben Allmark

Man of the Match – James “the beast” Godwin. Best line in match – Jerry Burns “you better sub me quick Birdy!” Best song of the match – Jack Burns in the changing room.(X factor here we come!)

Final Score: Gordano 2nd XV 12 - 38 Oldfield 2nd XV
